More information

This magnificient letter-opener plays upon the graphical beauty of the salamander, a legendary lizard-shaped animal said to posess supernatural powers.

Already mentioned by philosoper and scientist Pliny the Elder (A.D. 23–79), the salamander became a popular figure of Medieval European bestiaries, notably because of its said to be resistance to fire.

It even became during the 16th century the emblem of french king Francis the first, illustrating his motto : "I live among it and extinguish it".

Widely used in art history, including primitive arts or more recently art deco, the salamander is cleverly turned into a beautiful letter-opener made of gilded brass enhanced with Swarovski crystal beads.

Length 24 cm.
