A zibeth unawares by the panther

More information

Antoine-Louis BARYE (1796-1875), a famous master of animal sculpture in the 19th century, studied with Antoine Gros and Eugène Delacroix. He compiled two different versions of this cast. The first version, in the late 1840, showed a typical romantic hunting scene, similar to his emblematic works like the 'lion crushing a snake » in 1832, or the « tiger eating a gavial », in 1836.

The more anatomical and very realistic treatment of the panther in this second version clearly shows a change in Barye’s work, which becomes closer to the living models of the Natural Science Museum, where he used to teach drawing. The panther is more compact, its muscles more prominent and the zibeth is just a pretext to magnify the panther's movement.

Height : 22 cm, length : 38 cm, width : 13 cm. Weight : 6kg. Bronze cast bearing the Benneton Graveur stamp, numbered from 1/100 to 100/100.
